“Going back to school was my dream”: many seniors from Nice seduced by the free courses of the University of Côte d’Azur

Update 23-05 at 22:08

The city of Nice and the Université Côte d’Azur have decided to open their amphitheaters free of charge to people over 55. A resounding success, according to the graduates.

There was a lot of emotion at Nice Law School on Monday. A few dozen seniors – over 55s – received a certificate of honor, which concludes a school year. The document was provided to them by the President of the Université Côte d’Azur, Jeanick Brisswalter, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law (also a councilor responsible for higher education, research and continuing education), Xavier Tower. “As for students taking undergraduate courses”emphasizes the first.

No age to learn

Last year, each student chose one subject from the 250 offered. Art, literature, law, sociology, biology…the choice was huge. Faced with the success of this pilot program, Jeanick Brisswalter announces that he will open 100 more next school year. Objective: to spread the knowledge of the university to as many people as possible. “Especially for those who have time”he smiles. “And you may want to continue these studies”continues Xavier Latour.

Second interest: not to be out of step in a rapidly changing society. † Retiring is a bit like a long long vacation. We have to keep busy, gain new knowledge and teach the youngest, thanks to our experience”, highlights Françoise Monier, Deputy Mayor of Nice, Delegate for Intergenerational and Seniors. Comments accompanied by a general agreement.

“I chose this material out of taste and interest. Out of interest, because there are 1.4 billion Chinese. So 1.4 billion possible speakers. That’s a lot of people to talk to. To taste, because I do tai-chi, a Chinese gymnastics workout. I wanted to know and understand the traditional texts related to it. It is interesting to understand Chinese culture and its way of thinking through language.

Next year I really want to follow the bachelor’s degree programs at the university. When I was younger I thought I would learn Sanskrit [une langue indienne, ndlr] once retired. When I looked at the grammar, I ran. Chinese is a start. “I chose this material out of taste and interest. Out of interest, because there are 1.4 billion Chinese. So 1.4 billion possible speakers.
